Sitting just south of Enfield Falls, the first large waterfall in the Connecticut River, the suburban town of Windsor Locks is uniquely positioned close to major highways and an international airport. It is the home of Bradley International Airport, which opened as a military base in 1940. The air facility opened to civilians in 1967 and has become a hub for travelers seeking destinations in Western New England. This rich history is preserved in the New England Air Museum, a popular tourist attraction. More exciting fun for all ages can be found at Six Flags New England amusement park in Massachusetts but less than an hour drive from Windsor Locks.
Still, Windsor Locks is classic small town, with a diverse population of just under 13,000 residents. Pedestrian friendly Main Street is a growing hub of shops and restaurants owned by locals. But make no mistake, Windsor Locks and its proximity to Hartford and the mountains of Western Mass, abounds with opportunities for education, recreation, shopping and dining, and business development.
Stonebrook’s residents and guests alike will enjoy the outdoor pursuits nearby: Windsor Locks State Canal Trail offers scenic walking/jogging and biking trails, fishing holes, and picnic spots along the Connecticut River and the old Windsor Locks State Canal. Bring your camera to capture some of the flora and wildlife inhabitants such as bald eagles, hawks, owls and many others. Friends of the Canal has many opportunities for volunteers to provide historical and environmental education and wildlife enhancement programs for all ages to enjoy.
